Fiddlin' the Old Time Way

Clinch Mountain Express Newsletter Review

James Price has just released a new album on his own label, Primrose Records.  The project includes many of the most-requested fiddle tunes such as "Orange Blossom Special", "Cacklin' Hen", Sally Goodin" and "Suwanee River Hoedown".  It can be purchased from James at any live concert or ordered from Primrose Records, P.O. Box 2906, Lebanon, VA 24266.

We purchased a brand new copy of this recording, right out of the first box at Flowers Hall in Hanover, Ohio on 23 October.  This is the first release by James in a couple of years.  We think it sounds a little better each time we play it.  We especially enjoy hearing "Dark as a Dungeon", a song James Price seldom performs in concert.  Also noteworthy is that Primrose is James' own record company.  He tells us "Fiddlin' the Old Time Way" is the first release by Primrose, with many more coming.  James has two or three projects in the can and a pending video with various artists.  The record company is headquartered in Lebanon, Virginia.  James partners in this enterprise are Randy Hughes, a manager and promoter and supporter of bluegrass music.  Randy Brady is also a partner and owns a recording studio in Parkersburg.  James says his past experience leads him to confidence he can do a lot of good.  The focus at Primrose Records is on bluegrass as their first goal.  They're looking to sign a couple of new artists in '99 and grow slowly with a strong focus on quality.

We should also note that the song "Orange Blossom Special" features the recording debut of the legendary Poogie Jude from West Virginia.  Like James himself, Poogie has some big career goals.  He plans to be on a future project titled, "The Many Voices of James Price".  We're looking forward to that one.  Until it's released, we'll keep on listening to "Fiddlin' the Old Time Way".
